Information About Board and Train

Although we can help with basic training, speciality training and mild behaviour issues, we cannot accept dogs with the following issues into our program.

  • Aggression towards humans
  • Aggression towards dogs
  • Separation Anxiety in adult dog – this cannot be dealt with in Board and Train, please find a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT)
  • Fear of humans or fear of strangers (if they are fearful of humans they will not be comfortable here as we will be “strangers” to them)
  • Generalized Anxiety/Fear on a daily basis (dogs cannot learn new things when stressed and will not enjoy coming to a new place)

All training is done exclusively by Katherine Ferger SDC, KPA-CTP, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, CTDI and Sophie Buck KPA-CTP, CPDT-KA, CTDI

Why Board & Train?

Teaching your dog basic commands is one of the most important responsibilities of any dog owner. Sometimes though, the amount of time required in early training is much more than anticipated or some dogs have unexpected challenges which can slow down the learning process. We have the time, the experience and the knowledge to train your dog efficiently in a relatively short period of time.

You don’t need to be a professional dog trainer to own and handle a well-trained dog. Let us do the groundwork for you.  Your dog will receive exercise and play sessions and lots of love and affection while staying with us.We can do in two or three weeks what might take some owners several months to learn and practice in only once weekly classes. Quite simply, we have the time you may not.

How Does it Work?

Prior to booking your dog for a Board & Train program, you’ll have a consultation to discuss your training goals and their suitability to our program. A personalized plan will be designed and goal commands and behaviours will be identified.

Prior to coming home you will receive videos of your dog demonstrating the goal behaviours outlined in your original training plan so you can see first hand that your dog can do them as well as see how to maintain the behaviour in the real world. We will also show you how to continue on with training and to continue to reinforce what your dog has learned so they do not slip back into old bad habits. We are available for follow up as well by email and Zoom to touch base about any questions you may have the first few weeks back at home.

Does Board & Train Work?

YES! It can! Our particular program is successful where others have failed for several reasons. We rely on motivational training methods based on proven scientific principles of learning. Dogs who learn this way are more reliable and can transfer behaviours to other handlers who only have to maintain what has been learned instead of having to train the behaviour from scratch. So what your dog learns with us, he/she can do with any member of your family employing the same positive and motivational techniques we will show you upon graduation.

We train what you need whether for everyday life, walks and hikes, dog sports or for specific jobs such as service dog tasks, emotional support dog tasks, scent detection  and so on. We take the training and proof it for the environment you need your dog behaving so your dog learns things like settling on a mat while we watch TV, walking on a loose leash on the country roads of Essa and on the sidewalks in downtown Barrie. Recalls are taken outside to real parks with real distractions.  We train in the real world for the real world!

The success of our program also relies on your expectations and your commitment to follow through and maintain what your dog has learned. Our pre-boarding session with help you set realistic goals and we will individualize the training programs to your life and the needs and abilities of your dog and your family. We will also figure out how long a stay your dog will likely require at our facility. Most dogs average a three-week stay depending on what is being trained and the point we are starting from.

Our one on one session upon bringing your dog back to your home will ensure you have the skills and knowledge to keep your dog trained and to transfer all their new commands and behaviours to your home and life. Our taped sessions give you a chance to go over anything needing clarification and we are always here for follow up via telephone, text or email whenever you need it!

Walks, hikes and play time are an integral part of our programs success rate as well.

The fees include all training sessions, boarding fees, walking/hiking and exercise fees as well as one in home, one on one private session when your dog returns home.
